HSSK Named Finalist for Litigation Department of the Year in General Litigation
08/21/2025MILFORD, Conn (August 21, 2025) – Hurwitz Sagarin Slossberg & Knuff (HSSK) is proud to announce that it has been selected as a finalist for The New England Legal Awards Litigation Department of the Year in the category of General Litigation. The recognition places HSSK alongside some of the nation’s largest and most established firms, including Latham & Watkins, Skadden, WilmerHale, and Wiggin & Dana.
This honor highlights HSSK’s ability to deliver exceptional results in high-stakes litigation while competing with firms many times its size. As a boutique law firm, HSSK’s inclusion underscores the power of a focused, client-centered approach in a field often dominated by AmLaw 100 firms.
- Beatty et al. v. Gilman, et al. (D. Conn.): In partnership with the ACLU of Connecticut, HSSK filed a federal class action challenging Connecticut’s “pay-to-stay” statute, which imposed incarceration costs on formerly incarcerated individuals. The case helped drive legislative reform, contributed to important Excessive Fines Clause jurisprudence, and secured meaningful relief for named plaintiffs while pushing the state to curtail an inequitable practice.
- In re AIG Financial Products Corp. (Del. Bankr.): HSSK, partnering with Kobre & Kim, represents former executives pursuing over $400 million in unpaid deferred compensation. The case involves complex bankruptcy and state law issues, including claims of bad faith filing and tortious interference by AIG Inc. In 2024, the court denied AIG’s motions to dismiss, a pivotal victory that keeps alive high-stakes claims against one of the world’s most prominent financial institutions. In April and May 2025, HSSK participated in a complicated and lengthy trial of a significant portion of the case. The parties are awaiting a decision.
- Stone Academy Class Action: When a for-profit nursing school abruptly closed in February 2023, leaving nearly 1,000 students without degrees or transferrable credits, HSSK led a statewide response. On behalf of a class of displaced students, the firm sued both the school’s operators and Connecticut regulators. In February 2025, the court approved a $5 million settlement that provided tuition reimbursement, educational support, and legislative relief. The case exemplifies HSSK’s ability to blend litigation, public advocacy, and policymaking to deliver systemic change.
- Antitrust Class Action Against Pratt & Whitney (Borozny v. RTX Corp. et al.): HSSK played a central role in litigating a landmark no-poach antitrust case on behalf of aerospace engineers whose wages and career mobility were suppressed by secret agreements among major defense contractors. The case, which originated in HSSK’s offices, survived a contested motion to dismiss, including rulings on per se liability under the Sherman Act, and HSSK, along with co-counsel, secured a $60.5 million from RTX’s Pratt & Whitney division and other aerospace defendants. In a high-bar antitrust field dominated by national firms, HSSK proved it could take on the industry’s biggest names and win.
HSSK congratulates the other New England Legal Award finalists and honorees whose accomplishments continue to set the standard for excellence in the profession.
The Litigation Department of the Year awards celebrate firms that demonstrate outstanding performance in complex disputes, innovative legal strategies, and a commitment to client success. The winner will be announced on October 23, 2025, at the Westin Copley Place in Boston.
