Law360 Reports On $20M Prejudgment Demand by Former Stone Academy Nursing Students
11/09/2023In an article published by Law360, eight former Stone Academy nursing students, represented by Hurwitz Sagarin Slossberg & Knuff, have requested a Connecticut judge freeze $20 million of the school’s assets in anticipation of possible damages related to the outcome of a pending lawsuit. In Connecticut, a judge can order a prejudgment remedy and issue an attachment, garnishment, or replevin after finding probable cause that a plaintiff will prevail on the merits of their case.
In a court memo filed by HSSK, the named plaintiffs, seeking class-action status with about 1,000 other former Stone Academy students, claim they have suffered significant delay to their careers and loss of earning capacity by the abrupt shutdown of the school, leaving them without a way to finish their training and become licensed practical nurses. They assert the $20M is a modest amount of money, breaking down to only about $20,000 per student, compared to the hardships they’ve faced since the school’s closure.
