HSSK Files Second Class Action on Behalf of Former Stone Academy Students for Being Deprived of Earned Credits and Degrees

12/26/2023
HSSK has filed its second federal class action lawsuit on behalf of nine former students representing a class of approximately 1,000 aggrieved former students of the now-defunct Stone Academy nursing school. Filed on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, this lawsuit asserts that state officials at the Connecticut Office of Higher Education and the Connecticut Department of Public Health violated class members’ rights under the Fourteenth Amendment, which provides protected rights to the credits and degrees that the former students earned while the school was operating under valid accreditation. The defendants denied them their earned credits toward their nursing degrees, despite approving the school to operate. Among other claims, the lawsuit alleges that the state conducted an unauthorized audit that invalidated 76% of the earned or awarded credits, with no opportunity for the former students to appeal.
