Hurwitz Sagarin Slossberg & Knuff Secures $5M Class Action Settlement for Stone Academy Students

02/28/2025
A Connecticut judge has approved a $5 million class action settlement between former students and the now-defunct Stone Academy. This is a significant victory for a class of over 1,000 students and Hurwitz Sagarin Slossberg & Knuff (HSSK).

Superior Court Judge W. Glen Pierson ruled the settlement was “fair, reasonable, and adequate,” noting the complexity of the case and the financial relief it provides to students left in limbo by the school’s closure. The agreement covers all students enrolled between November 2021 and February 2023, with additional financial provisions for remedial courses and lead plaintiffs.

The lawsuit, filed in May 2023, accused Stone Academy of violating Connecticut’s Unfair Trade Practices Act by continuing to enroll students despite its financial instability.

HSSK Partner David A. Slossberg highlighted the significance of the settlement, which includes a commitment from state officials to support legislation expanding student protections. “One of the reasons this was so complex was because public and private stakeholders were at the table,” Slossberg said.

The HSSK team representing the class in this litigation included David Slossberg, Timothy Cowan, Erica Nolan and Julie Pinette.
