The case filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and outside counsel HSSK against Connecticut’s Governor and Attorney General challenging Connecticut’s pay-to-stay law was dismissed by agreement, marking a significant development for formerly incarcerated individuals. The lawsuit, which sought relief on behalf of a proposed class, catalyzed substantial changes to the state’s carceral lien statute and led to favorable outcomes for the plaintiffs.

HSSK has filed its second federal class action lawsuit on behalf of nine former students representing a class of approximately 1,000 aggrieved former students of the now-defunct Stone Academy nursing school. 

In an article published by Law360, eight former Stone Academy nursing students have requested a Connecticut judge freeze $20 million of the school’s assets in anticipation of possible damages related to the outcome of a pending lawsuit.  

NBC Connecticut, WTNH News-8, and WFSB Eyewitness News reported on a virtual hearing in which Stone Academy’s former president and co-owner Joseph Bierbaum testified for the first time about the nursing school’s abrupt closing back in February. The hearing concluded on October 19, 2023.
